Matchday 45 (Play Off Final) 2018 Season Review – Jubilo Iwata 2-0 Tokyo Verdy
Verdy couldn’t replicate the playoff wins over fellow J2 sides Omiya and Yokohama and get into J1 – the lads just couldn’t beat Jubilo Iwata on the day, so they (Iwata) will be playing in J1 while Verdy will be in JLeague Division 2 for the 2019 Season, a few days later the club announced that Miguel Angel Lotina and Ivan Palanco Santiago would be leaving Verdy after a couple of seasons in charge, after getting Verdy in the Top 10 in those 2 seasons deserves a massive thank you for getting the boys in Green up there in the playoff picture each time – in Lotina/Santiago first season, they got Verdy into 5th place with 70 points but lost to Avispa in the Semi Final of the PlayOff’s while the 2018 Season – Lotina and Santiago with Verdy went one better and getting into the final with a different type of a playoff system (which I don’t think works that well).
To The Game itself, it was Verdy who was first chance on goal when a long ball up the field found Douglas Vieira but he could get the ball past the Kaminski and the Iwata defender, there was some flowing football from Iwata ultimately led to Naoto Kamifukumoto giving away a penalty just before half time and it was scored by Koki Ogawa by sending Kamifukumoto the wrong way to make it 1-0 to the home team, into the second half and it was another chance for Iwata when Koki Ogawa put his chance just wide, Verdy then had a good chance when a free kick came into the box and the ball fell to Leandro and his shot was saved by Kaminski, there was another chance for Ogawa but was well saved by Kamifukumoto and Iwata hit the cross bar from a shot by Yoshito Okubo but it 10 minutes to go, Taishi Taguchi scored a free kick to seal Iwata place in J1 and Verdy stay in J2. What a disappointment for Verdy in the end after having such a amazing season overall after getting so far into the playoffs and coming up short
Just a massive thank you to the Tokyo Verdy Management/Players/Staff and especially the fans for a amazing 2018 Season – All the best to Lotina and Santiago for the 2 seasons and I would like to wish them all the very best for the future.
